[“The Marshes from above and below”. Animal Bone Analyses on Finds from the redoubt of Diele], report submitted to the Archaeological Service of the Ostfriesische Landschaft Aurich
Abstract
The Dieler Schanze is a redoubt in East Frisia. From the end of the 16th to the end of the 17th century it was part of the defense system of the protestant countries of Groningen and East Frisia against the catholic country of Münster. During the archaeological excavation of the central structure of the redoubt (Jemgumer Zwinger) between 2010 and 2013 amongst others a large amount of faunal remains was recovered. Of these two assemblages from different contexts of the early 17th century were analyzed. One is from the soldier’s barracks, the other from the headquarter building. The assemblages clearly display the social differences. While the material from the barracks consists almost entirely of domestic mammals and birds, the material from the headquarters contains a large number of wild fowl, fish, molluscs and game. The domestic animal remains from the headquarters show a pattern of higher quality meat portions as well. The analysis shows markedly how social differences are expressed by through food culture.
