Abstract
This paper is concerned with the production of and trade with stockfish, from its beginning in Northern Norway to its development towards a Europe wide trade network and the provision of large population groups with protein. The focus lies on the Hanseatic trade, which is analysed using historical documents and archaeozoological fish bones.
